Laura’s been steadily beading all year long, in between teaching classes at Bead Lounge in Longmont and polishing up her metal working skills. She’s made several beautiful new beaded dolls, an will see her work published in upcoming books by renowned bead artist Heidi Kummli and Sarajane Helm of PolyMarket Press. These dolls range from 3 inches to around 10 inches tall.

Laura is an instructor and sells her jewelry at The Bead Lounge in Longmont, Colorado. Every year they host a Day Of The Dead Celebration and gallery competition. Here’s a look at the beaded entries by Laura this year. Paper roses and a bony skull testify to ephemeral life’s beauty!

The jaunty gent features a glass skull made by MAD Margie. Lots of little beads–and a feather in his hat– went into the creation of this wearable art twosome.

Another Beaded Babe

Laura has done it again! Another fully beaded doll with a clay face, this time one of her own design.

All those seed beads and larger glass and metal beads add to this beautiful doll’s weight, and she’s exuberant and impressive all at once.

Laura has gone all out with beaded hair as well, and says she spent approximately 60 hours on this one too. She loves projects like this and still finds time to work on bead weaving and making new ceramic faces, beads, and components for upcoming projects.

Beaded Passion

This beautiful spirit doll is 8 inches tall, sports a wild mane of hair and is beaded all over, front and back. Her name is Passion, and she shows a real love of seed bead embroidery.

She started out life as a commercially made 8 inch white cotton doll body and a face made of polymer clay by Sarajane Helm.

Laura often dyes the doll body on a spirit doll, but this one is fully beaded. It required 60 hours of stitching to get her to this exquisite state, and several tubes of beads.

More than forty beading needles got bent out of shape during the process, but Laura had a wonderful time creating her. The results are certainly worth it!

Fine lampwork glass reminiscent of the ocean linked with goldfill wirework. This is a double strand necklace designed for dreams of warm winds and high seas.

This PMC pendant features a buddha figure and lotus in silver with applied patina, and a ruby cubic zirconia.

This pendant features a serene and sympathetic buddha patinated in a green finish. The lotus flower enshrines the buddha in raised detail.

Day of the Dead Necklace 2

Laura started with colorful vintage ceramic beads and added carved bone skull beads and precious metal clay (PMC) to create this vivid necklace for the Day of the Dead celebration. It’s her second entry in the competition at Nomad Designs, a bead store located in Boulder Colorado.

The large carved bone skull has a PMC hood or niche festooned with stars and her trademark colorful patina makaes the fine silver shine with color.

The smaller skull beads are nestled in their own PMC settings and makeup the bottom of the beaded tassel. Laura links it all together with patinated wire.
